Sweden is sending Patriot air defence to Poland

Sweden will send Patriot air defence to Poland and around 100 soldiers and officers to protect NATO’s logistics hub in Rzeszów, a key transit point for military and civilian support to Ukraine. The deployment is expected to begin on 1 December, according to SVT.

The Swedish unit will operate the Patriot system under NATO command and help defend the hub against threats including drones and missiles. It will be the first time Sweden takes part in a NATO operation with its Patriot system, according to the Swedish Armed Forces.

“This is the most complex operation Sweden has undertaken as a NATO ally,” Sofia Westermark, commander of Sweden’s Air Defence Regiment, told SVT.

The Netherlands currently carries out the air-defence mission at the hub. Sweden is expected to take over from December.

Why the Rzeszów logistics hub matters

The NATO logistics hub in Rzeszów, in south-eastern Poland, is one of the main points through which military equipment destined for Ukraine passes.

Around 18,000 tonnes of materiel move through the hub every month, according to NATO and SVT. NATO has already deployed air-defence systems, including Patriot batteries, to protect the facility.

Swedish military officials say there is a threat to the site from both the air and the ground, and assess that Russia could seek to disrupt its operations. Defence Minister Pål Jonson described the deployment as an operational mission carried out together with Sweden’s allies, pointing to Russia’s growing long-range strike capabilities.

The Swedish government said the purpose of the deployment is both to protect NATO’s eastern flank and to ensure that military and civilian support can continue reaching Ukraine.

Sweden is expanding its NATO role in Poland

The Patriot deployment is part of a broader expansion of Sweden’s military presence on NATO’s eastern flank.

At the end of September, Stockholm announced that Swedish Gripen fighter jets would again be deployed to Poland from October. They are contributing to NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence and to the protection of the same logistics operation supporting Ukraine.

The addition of Patriot means Sweden will now contribute both fighter aircraft and ground-based air defence to NATO operations in Poland. NRK described the Patriot as Sweden’s most advanced air-defence system.

The Swedish Armed Forces currently has a decision covering the Patriot mission from the beginning of December until the end of 2026 and is preparing for it to continue during the first half of 2027. SVT reports that the operation could last for up to seven months, depending on decisions taken by Sweden’s next government.
