Copenhagen is the setting for Hallmark’s new Christmas romance

A Danish Christmas puts Copenhagen at the centre of Hallmark’s 2026 festive film season, with a romantic story built around a family inn, a mistaken identity and an attempt to create the perfect Danish Christmas. The film stars Emilie Ullerup and Corey Sevier, with its USA television premiere scheduled for 1 November 2026.

For the Danish capital, the setting brings familiar seasonal food and everyday cycling into an American romantic comedy. The city is part of the story itself: showing a visitor around Copenhagen becomes the heroine’s way of trying to save her family’s business.

A Danish Christmas follows a homecoming and a misunderstanding

According to Hallmark’s official synopsis, Marie is a hotel technology executive living in Chicago who returns to Copenhagen for the holidays and helps at her family’s inn. When Ryan checks in, she mistakes him for a travel writer whose coverage could bring in more guests.

The stakes rise when Marie learns that her mother intends to sell the inn after New Year. She puts together a Christmas itinerary and tries to make Ryan’s stay memorable, although her plans do not run smoothly. Their growing connection provides the romantic strand of the film.

Ullerup’s connection to the setting extends beyond the character. The Copenhagen-born actress trained at Vancouver Film School and is known to Hallmark audiences for playing Bree O’Brien in Chesapeake Shores. Here she returns to her home city on screen.

Gløgg, æbleskiver and Copenhagen’s fairytale image

TV 2 Kosmopol reports that the characters eat æbleskiver, drink gløgg and cycle around Copenhagen. Part of the production was also filmed at a farm in Farum, outside the capital.

The food references are rooted in Danish seasonal traditions. Æbleskiver are small, round sweet treats served with icing sugar, while gløgg is hot mulled wine. Both feature in VisitDenmark’s account of Christmas customs.

Journalist Casper Hindse, who writes for Ritzau and film magazine Ekko, told TV 2 Kosmopol that the choice of location fits Copenhagen’s reputation abroad:

“Copenhagen is the fairytale city above all fairytale cities.”

Hindse describes the plot as a familiar Hallmark formula: a busy woman returns home, encounters romance and moves towards a happy ending. In this version, Danish Christmas customs supply the setting for that established story.

The premiere is part of Hallmark’s Christmas season

The film belongs to Countdown to Christmas, Hallmark Channel’s seasonal programme of festive films. Its first broadcast in the USA is listed for 8pm Eastern and 7pm Central on 1 November, with streaming on Hallmark+ from 2 November.
