Trump attacks Norway again over his failure to win the Nobel Peace Prize, calling the country a “shithouse country” at a campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan, on Sunday, 25 October. The USA president also said he did not want immigrants from Norway, explicitly linking his remarks to the 2026 award.
Speaking to supporters during the campaign event, President Donald Trump said:
“Frankly, Norway sucks. Norway has become a shithouse country, actually.”
Trump attacks Norway a day after praising its immigrants
Just a day earlier, at a rally in Perry, Georgia, Trump had named Norway, Sweden and Denmark as countries from which he would prefer to accept immigrants, according to the transcript of his speech.
In Michigan, he reversed that position, saying he did not want people from Norway because he had not received the Nobel Peace Prize. There was no indication of any change to USA immigration policy concerning Norwegians.
Norway points to the Nobel Committee’s independence
Responding on Monday, Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide told public broadcaster NRK:
“He knows very well that the Nobel Committee is independent. We have reminded him of that, in case anyone is wondering, and that remains the case.”
The Norwegian Nobel Committee (Den norske Nobelkomité) consists of five members selected by the Norwegian Parliament (Stortinget), but operates independently when deciding who receives the prize. The Norwegian government does not choose the winner.
This year’s Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to South African jurist Navi Pillay for her work promoting peace and international law, as NordiskPost reported when the decision was announced on 9 October. Trump had already criticised Norway over the decision earlier this month.
