Nearly 7,000 families seek Christmas aid in Denmark in one day

Christmas aid in Denmark attracted 6,880 applications from families with children during the first 24 hours after Blue Cross Denmark (Blå Kors Danmark) opened its 2026 scheme on 20 October. The charity said this was a record for the first day of applications.

The total, announced on 21 October, compares with more than 5,000 applications in the opening 24 hours of 2025. Blue Cross Denmark received over 23,000 applications throughout last year’s campaign. These figures refer to the charity’s own programme, not every form of Christmas assistance available in Denmark.

Why families are seeking Christmas aid

The scheme offers a DKK 700 (approximately €94) gift card for Lidl supermarkets, intended to help with food and presents. It is aimed at financially vulnerable households with children under 18 living at home whose parents receive public income-support payments.

Morten Skov Mogensen, secretary-general of Blue Cross Denmark, said many families were already struggling to cover ordinary expenses, well before Christmas brings additional costs.

“When money barely covers everyday expenses, it can be hard to see how there will also be enough for Christmas food and gifts.”

Mogensen said parents wanted to preserve familiar Christmas traditions, including a shared meal and presents for their children, despite pressure on household budgets.

Applications are open until 19 November

Eligible families can apply through Blue Cross Denmark’s Christmas aid page until noon on 19 November 2026. The charity says applicants will hear about the outcome by 17 December. The programme is supported by a mix of public funding, foundations, businesses and private donations.
