Frederiksberg children’s library will be completely redesigned during 2027, with the municipality investing DKK 7.2 million (€963,000) in new spaces for children, teenagers and families at Frederiksberg Main Library.
According to Frederiksberg Municipality, the approximately 1,500-square-metre area will be reorganised to accommodate different age groups and different ways of experiencing literature. Construction is due to begin in spring 2027 and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Frederiksberg children’s library will have spaces for different ages
The new interior has been designed by NERD Architects and will divide the library more clearly into areas intended for different age groups.
The plans include spaces for reading, exhibitions and activities, as well as areas where younger children can play with books and literature. Older children and teenagers will have more space for reading, spending time together and taking part in activities.
There will also be dedicated facilities for coats, prams and eating packed meals.
The municipality said the design was developed following workshops and interviews involving school pupils, upper-secondary students, kindergarten groups, parents and library staff.
The renovation concerns the children’s and youth section in the basement of Frederiksberg Main Library, in a space originally designed by Danish architect Henning Larsen.
The municipality wants to strengthen reading culture
Frederiksberg Municipality says the renovation is intended to support children’s and young people’s engagement with books and create better settings for communities centred on literature.
Mayor (borgmester) Michael Vindfeldt said strengthening reading habits was one of the reasons for investing in the project.
“A strong reading culture is crucial for strengthening our children’s and young people’s ability to concentrate, learn and, not least, their wellbeing.”
Vindfeldt said the municipality wanted to improve the conditions for the library’s work encouraging children to read from an early age.
Chair of the Culture and Leisure Committee Lotte Kofoed also described the future library as a meeting place for families, children and young people, with more opportunities for reading and spending time together.
Work will start in spring 2027
The DKK 7.2 million (€963,000) allocated by Frederiksberg Municipal Council will cover the renovation and furnishing of the approximately 1,500-square-metre area.
Work is scheduled to start in spring 2027 and finish by the end of the year. The municipality has not yet specified exactly how the renovation will affect access to the existing children’s and youth library while construction is under way.
Updates on temporary changes will be published through Frederiksberg Libraries and displayed inside the library.
The project will give Frederiksberg Main Library a dedicated children’s and youth area designed around different stages of childhood, from families with very young children to teenagers, while keeping literature at the centre of the space.
