Nordre Follo is leaving Facebook over misinformation concerns

Nordre Follo, a municipality in Norway, is leaving Facebook as an active information channel, saying residents should not have to navigate unsafe and false information to find official updates.

The municipality has announced that it is putting its account on pause and will no longer be active there, according to NRK’s report. It will continue using Instagram and LinkedIn.

Why Nordre Follo is leaving Facebook

The decision centres on the information residents encounter around the municipality’s own posts. In its announcement on Facebook, the municipality said:

“We do not want to be on a channel where we feel our users have to get through a wall of unsafe and false information to reach the municipality’s information.”

Communications Director Morten Ellingsen told the Norwegian news agency NTB that the municipality had been considering the move for some time.

Residents can use other municipal channels

The municipality’s current guide to its information channels lists Instagram, Hudd, WhatsApp and LinkedIn, alongside its app and newsletter. Facebook is absent from that list.

The guide also directs residents to the municipal website for updated information about services, public consultations and official notices.

For now, the withdrawal applies to Facebook. The municipality said it had chosen to remain on Instagram, while making clear that its continued presence there was not an unconditional commitment.
