Entire season of Swedish reality show deleted by mistake

An entire edited season of a Swedish reality show has been accidentally deleted just weeks before its scheduled premiere. Swedish broadcaster TV4 has confirmed that the second season of The Challenge Sverige must be edited again from scratch, forcing the channel to postpone its launch from 22 November 2026 to 2027.

The incident took place at Mastiff, the production company responsible for the programme. According to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, the deletion wiped out around 100 days of editing work, leaving the production team facing the task of reconstructing the completed season.

The original recordings have survived, meaning the episodes can still be produced. However, the loss of the finished edits has made it impossible to meet the original broadcasting schedule.

How the Swedish reality show lost an entire season

The circumstances surrounding the deletion initially raised questions about the use of artificial intelligence in television production.

Aftonbladet first reported, citing unnamed sources, that an AI agent had been given access to Mastiff’s servers and had deleted the completed season, making the edited project impossible to recover.

However, TV4 subsequently rejected this explanation. The broadcaster said its investigation pointed to human error at the production company rather than an autonomous AI system.

Speaking to Swedish public broadcaster SVT, TV4 press officer Ludvig Ternstedt denied that an AI agent had independently accessed and deleted the material.

The broadcaster instead identified a failed backup system as a central problem.

TV4 programming director Mia Lindqvist explained the situation in comments published by the channel:

The big problem in this case is that the backup did not work.

Lindqvist confirmed that the original footage remains intact, but the completed editing work cannot be recovered. The precise technical circumstances of the deletion have not been fully explained.

The Challenge Sverige postponed until 2027

The Challenge Sverige is the Swedish adaptation of an American reality competition format in which contestants, many already known from other television programmes, compete in demanding physical challenges and strategic games.

The first Swedish season aired on TV4 in 2024. The upcoming second season is hosted by comedian Ahmed Berhan and features contestants including Mattias Helén, Emil Renmarker, Nardos Alberto and Stephanie Hönig.

The production setback has also affected the participants. Hönig told TV4 that she was disappointed by the delay and expressed sympathy for the production staff who will have to repeat their work.

TV4 has informed the participants and presenter about the incident. The broadcaster expects the programme to return in 2027, although no exact premiere date has been confirmed.
