The hottest day ever recorded in Denmark

Denmark heat record reached 37.0°C on Saturday, 27 June 2026, making it the hottest day ever measured in the country, according to the Danish Meteorological Institute (Danmarks Meteorologiske Institut, DMI). The temperature was recorded in two separate locations, Ødum in eastern Jutland and Beldringe near Odense, during an exceptional wave of hot air moving north from continental Europe.

Denmark heat record breaks the 1975 national high

The new Danish heat record surpassed the previous all-time high of 36.4°C, measured in Holstebro on 10 August 1975. DMI said the heat peaked at around 14:45, when both Ødum, north of Aarhus, and Beldringe, north of Odense, reached 37.0°C.

The record also rewrote Denmark’s June statistics. The previous June record was 35.5°C, measured in Hillerød on 30 June 1947. Saturday’s reading beat that mark by 1.5°C, a large margin in national temperature records.

DR reported that the day had already shown unusual signs from the morning. Fanø recorded a tropical night with a minimum temperature of 22.5°C, the highest June minimum temperature measured in Denmark. By late morning, temperatures had passed 30°C in several places, before H.C. Andersen Airport north of Odense reached 35.8°C and broke the June record.

The all-time record then fell in stages. H.C. Andersen Airport reached 36.6°C early in the afternoon, before the final 37.0°C reading was measured both there and in Ødum. Holbæk also exceeded the former national record, reaching 36.9°C.

Extreme Danish temperatures came from continental Europe

DMI linked the record to an unusually warm air mass that had moved north from continental Europe after affecting other parts of the continent. The institute said the same weather pattern had contributed to heatwaves in Spain and France before reaching Denmark.

The Danish record came during a wider European heatwave, with several countries reporting exceptional temperatures and pressure on public services, transport and energy systems. Reuters reported that temperature records were also broken or approached in other parts of Europe as the heat moved east and north.

For Denmark, the event was especially notable because the country’s geography usually limits the highest summer temperatures. Surrounded by the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, Denmark is often moderated by maritime air. A 37.0°C reading therefore marks a significant threshold in the country’s climate and weather history.

Thunderstorms followed the Danish heat record

The record heat was followed by unstable weather. DMI warned that thunderstorms, hail and heavy rain were affecting parts of Denmark after temperatures peaked. Warm and humid air created conditions for intense showers, with risks of strong wind gusts in parts of the country.

DR reported that a powerful storm developed in the afternoon heat and affected parts of southern Jutland and Funen. The day therefore combined two connected weather risks: extreme heat followed by heavy convective storms.

Climate change is changing Nordic heat risks

DMI said the new Denmark heat record is consistent with expectations for a warmer climate. The institute stressed that a single weather record cannot be explained only by climate change, but that global warming makes heatwaves and extreme temperature records more likely.

Martin Olesen from DMI’s National Centre for Climate Research (Nationalt Center for Klimaforskning) described the event as an interaction between weather and climate. “There is nothing unusual in the weather situation where high pressure stays over the country for a long time,” he said, “but the current weather is taking place on top of global warming.”

Scientific assessments of recent European heatwaves point in the same direction. World Weather Attribution has said that fossil fuel emissions have made European heatwaves more intense and more frequent in recent decades.

The Danish record adds a Nordic data point to a wider European pattern. Extreme heat is no longer only a southern European concern. For Denmark and the wider Nordic region, the 37.0°C threshold will likely strengthen discussions on climate adaptation, heat warnings, public health preparedness and infrastructure resilience.
