Norway earthquake reports spread across the Oslo region on Sunday after a magnitude 3.6 tremor was felt in southern Norway, with residents describing a short rumble and shaking but authorities reporting no significant damage.
A shallow earthquake felt across eastern Norway
The earthquake was registered at 09:24:54 local time and was initially estimated at around magnitude 3 before Norway’s seismic research foundation NORSAR revised the reading to 3.6. Early calculations first placed the epicentre near Lillestrøm, east of Oslo, before later analysis suggested an area farther north-east, close to Jessheim.
The tremor lasted only a few seconds, but it was strong enough to wake residents, shake apartments and prompt calls to emergency services. In Oslo, people reported a deep sound followed by brief movement. Some residents initially feared a structural collapse or another incident before news reports confirmed that the cause was an earthquake.
NORSAR said the quake was likely relatively shallow, with preliminary estimates placing it at a depth of about 5 to 10 kilometres. That helped explain why it was felt clearly by people across densely populated areas. Earthquakes in Norway often occur deeper underground, typically at around 10 to 20 kilometres.
Norway earthquake was the strongest in the region since 2011
NORSAR described the event as the strongest earthquake in eastern Norway since 2011, when a magnitude 3.8 tremor was recorded. The institute initially said it was the strongest since 2004, but later corrected the comparison.
According to NORSAR, earthquakes above magnitude 3 are not unusual in eastern Norway, although they are uncommon enough to attract public attention when they occur near urban areas. Over the past 25 years, the region has recorded eight earthquakes above magnitude 3.
The Oslo area sits on the Oslo Rift, a geological formation created about 300 million years ago. The crust in the area contains several smaller faults, and even modest changes in stress can produce movement along these structures. Most earthquakes in the region occur around such faults.
No damage reported, and no increased landslide risk
Police districts in Oslo and eastern Norway said they received many calls from residents asking about the sound and shaking, but no significant damage had been reported shortly after the earthquake. Emergency services continued to monitor the situation, while a police helicopter examined the area around Sørum, which had been indicated as a possible epicentral zone.
The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (Norges vassdrags- og energidirektorat, NVE) also said the earthquake was too small to trigger landslides or other secondary hazards. Lars Harald Blikra, head of the flood and landslide section at NVE, said a magnitude 3.6 earthquake is far below the level normally associated with such risks.
NVE said it had no indication that the tremor could create problems in areas with quick clay. According to the agency, earthquakes generally need to be above magnitude 6 before they pose this kind of concern.
Oslo Airport was not affected. Avinor, the Norwegian airport operator, told NRK that air traffic at Oslo Airport continued as normal.
Tremors also reported in Sweden
Reports came from a wide area of southern Norway, including Oslo, Bærum, Lillestrøm, Drøbak, Lier, Skien, Tønsberg, Fredrikstad, Kongsvinger and parts of Innlandet. Several residents described a short but unsettling experience, with objects moving or falling inside homes.
The tremor was also felt across the border in Sweden. Swedish public broadcaster SVT reported observations from several places in Värmland, including Torsby, Arvika and Karlstad.
The event also highlighted the limits of automatic mobile alerts. Some Android users received notifications estimating the magnitude at 4.4, but those figures were based on automatic calculations from phone data. Official seismic services later placed the magnitude at 3.6.
A reminder that Norway is not earthquake-free
Norway is not usually associated with destructive earthquakes, but seismic activity is recorded regularly. Most events are small and cause no damage. What made Sunday’s earthquake notable was not its magnitude, but its location near a densely populated area and its shallow depth.
For residents in and around Oslo, the tremor was an unusual reminder that northern Europe is not geologically inactive. For authorities, the response focused on verification, reassurance and monitoring. With no reported damage and no increased landslide risk, the main impact was a brief moment of alarm across one of Norway’s most populated regions.
