Jonas Lovv wins Norway’s Melodi Grand Prix 2026

On Saturday, Jonas Lovv won Norway’s Melodi Grand Prix 2026 with the song “Ya ya ya”. The artist defeated the established favorite, Alexander Rybak, during the final broadcast. Consequently, Lovv will represent the country at the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna, Austria.

An unexpected victory

The competition featured nine finalists. Initially, analysts considered Alexander Rybak the primary candidate for the win. Rybak is a well-known veteran who previously won the European competition. However, Jonas Lovv secured the victory by winning both the international jury vote and the public televote. Specifically, Lovv accumulated a total of 265 points. Rybak finished second with 192 points for his song “Rise”. Ultimately, audiences strongly supported the underdog throughout the voting process.

The emergence of Jonas Lovv

Jonas Lovv is a 24-year-old singer-songwriter from the Innlandet region. He started his musical career on independent platforms and gained local recognition by performing at regional festivals and at The Voice Norway. Prior to his participation in the Melodi Grand Prix 2026, Lovv worked as a music teacher.

Furthermore, he released several self-produced tracks online. His musical style integrates traditional acoustic elements with contemporary pop production. Therefore, this grassroots background contributed significantly to his strong support from the televoting public.

The Norwegian selection process

The Melodi Grand Prix serves as the official mechanism to select the Norwegian representative for the Eurovision Song Contest. The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (Norsk rikskringkasting) organizes this annual televised music event. The public format allows viewers and a jury panel to choose the winning entry. During the final, Lovv received the maximum score of 96 points from the international juries. Subsequently, the public vote confirmed his overall lead.

The choice of an emerging artist over an established former winner highlights a shift in public preference toward new musical proposals.
