12,000 Ikea employees miss salary due to payroll error

Approximately 12,000 workers faced an unexpected Ikea Sweden salary delay on the scheduled payday of February 25. The disruption stems from a human error within the company’s internal payroll system. Management expects to resolve the issue swiftly. Consequently, the company will ensure all affected staff receive their monthly salary on Thursday, February 26.

The cause of the payment failure

An administrative worker entered an incorrect date into the system, causing the disruption. This technical mistake prevented the automated bank transfers from processing on the morning of February 25. Fredrik Norrlid, Press Manager at Ikea Sweden (Ikea Sverige), confirmed the issue in a statement to the newspaper Aftonbladet.

He apologized for the inconvenience caused to the workforce. Fortunately, the company identified the error quickly. Therefore, the financial department rescheduled the disbursements for the following day.

Impact on the Ikea Sweden workforce

Ikea operates as one of the largest private employers in the country. This administrative error affects a significant portion of its domestic staff. Furthermore, these employees work across retail stores, logistics centers, and corporate offices.

The salary delay spans only 24 hours. Nevertheless, it disrupts the standard financial routine for thousands of workers. The company communicated the updated payment timeline internally to mitigate uncertainty. Additionally, management assured employees that they are reviewing the payroll system to prevent future occurrences.

Context of the Swedish payroll system

In Sweden, the standard payday (löningsdag) for most salaried workers falls on the 25th of each month. This specific date strictly aligns with the standard billing cycle for rent and utilities. Citizens typically pay these recurring bills at the very end of the month.

Therefore, even a short delay in receiving a salary requires employees to adjust their short-term financial management. Ikea’s quick resolution aims to limit the practical impact on its workers’ ability to meet their financial obligations.
