Bus crashes into building in central Copenhagen: 18 people hospitalised

A city bus crashed into a building in central Copenhagen on Saturday night, injuring 18 people who were taken to hospital with minor injuries, according to Copenhagen Police (Københavns Politi).

Emergency response and minor injuries

The crash occurred at the intersection of Sølvgade and Øster Voldgade, directly across from the Statens Museum for Kunst (National Gallery of Denmark). Police said the bus driver and 17 passengers were taken to hospital, while six others escaped without injuries.

“The injuries involve bruises, minor cuts and nosebleeds — all in the mild category,” said Henrik Stormer, the police duty officer, speaking to Ritzau. An emergency doctor attended the scene and assessed the passengers before several were taken by ambulance and others by taxi to hospital.

According to police, most passengers were young people returning home from the city, which might have contributed to the relatively minor extent of the injuries.

Building stabilised before bus removal

The bus crashed into Sølvgades Kaserne, a historic building formerly used as DSB’s headquarters and now converted into student housing. Structural engineers have been called to the site, as the building must be stabilised before the vehicle can be removed.

“They cannot move the bus before the building is secured. The immediate assessment is that the facade could collapse if the bus is simply pulled out,” Stormer explained.

Traffic disruption and ongoing investigation

The intersection remains partially closed while police and technicians secure the area. Traffic is restricted but not fully stopped. Authorities have yet to determine what caused the bus to leave the road and crash into the building.

Copenhagen Police said the investigation is ongoing and urged drivers to avoid the area until further notice.
