Viaplay has acquired the remaining 50% of Allente, the Nordic satellite and streaming TV provider, gaining full control over the company. The deal, valued at 730 million DKK (approx. €98 million), sees Telenor, Norway’s telecommunications giant, selling its entire stake in the joint venture.
Viaplay strengthens position in Nordic media market
The acquisition marks a strategic shift for Viaplay Group, a major streaming platform in the Nordic region, known for offering films, series, sports, and original content. By taking over full ownership of Allente, Viaplay consolidates its presence in a competitive media landscape increasingly shaped by digital streaming services.
Allente was created in 2020 through the merger of Canal Digital (formerly owned by Telenor) and Viasat Consumer (owned by Viaplay, then part of Nordic Entertainment Group). The joint venture was designed to combine traditional satellite TV services with streaming solutions across Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden.
Today, Allente serves over one million customers across the Nordic countries, offering hybrid solutions that bridge the gap between linear and digital broadcasting.

Background on the companies
Viaplay is a Swedish-based streaming company that operates in several European countries, focusing on premium TV content including original series, live sports, and international films. It has been navigating a complex financial restructuring in recent years to maintain growth and relevance amid fierce global competition.
Telenor, headquartered in Oslo, is one of the leading telecommunications companies in the Nordics and Asia, providing mobile, broadband and TV services. Its decision to sell its stake in Allente may signal a strategic refocus on core telecom operations.
Allente, now fully under Viaplay’s control, will likely play a key role in the group’s evolving strategy to integrate satellite and streaming technologies, potentially streamlining services and enhancing customer retention.

Financial and strategic implications
The acquisition aligns with Viaplay group’s long-term plan to simplify its structure and focus on scalable assets. The move also reflects broader trends in the Nordic media sector, where legacy operators are repositioning themselves to adapt to new consumption habits.
Analysts will be watching closely to see how Viaplay leverages Allente’s infrastructure and subscriber base, and whether the consolidation will translate into improved profitability and service offerings for customers in the region.
