Uppsala braces for surge in youth seeking exit from gang life after triple murder

Uppsala’s exit programs for young people wanting to leave criminal environments are preparing for a potential surge in demand following a triple shooting that left three teenagers dead earlier this week. The incident, which has shaken the local community, has led to a wave of concern from parents and adolescents contacting municipal services.

“We have a big job to do,” said Hero Axelsson, head of the exit services in Uppsala kommun (Uppsala Municipality). “It is a great sorrow that three young people have been affected by this terrible violence. At the same time, it makes me even more determined to provide support for those who want to leave.”

Recent violence drives parents and youth to seek help

The triple homicide, which occurred in central Uppsala on Tuesday night, sparked widespread grief and fear. Among the victims was 15-year-old Aiham, whose death has deeply impacted friends and family. In tribute, his football teammates wore shirts with his name during their next match.

While the number of individuals formally entering the exit programs has not yet seen a significant rise, officials anticipate a growing need in the coming weeks. “We’ve already heard from more concerned parents and young people via Ungdomsjouren (Youth Support Service) in recent days,” Axelsson noted.

Improved accessibility after criticism

During a wave of gang violence in September 2023, SVT conducted an undercover test that revealed serious delays in response from the municipality’s intervention teams. Posing as a gang-affiliated youth seeking help, a reporter received no answer for an entire week.

In response, Uppsala has since worked to enhance accessibility to its exit services. “We’ve clarified our information and improved pathways to reach us,” Axelsson said. “Most people now connect with us through open care services, such as Ungdomsjouren.”
