More Icelanders sell ice cream than study ocean currents

AMOC research in Iceland is becoming a political and scientific priority after local experts warned that the country has too few specialists studying the ocean currents that help shape its climate, fisheries and long-term security.

The warning came during a discussion on Iceland’s public broadcaster RÚV about the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, or AMOC, the system of Atlantic currents that moves warm water northwards and colder deep water southwards. A new study has renewed concern that the circulation may weaken more sharply than many earlier projections suggested, even though scientists still disagree on the likelihood and timing of a possible collapse.

Why Iceland is focusing on the AMOC risk

The AMOC is one of the main reasons why the North Atlantic region, including Iceland and Scandinavia, has a milder climate than its latitude would otherwise suggest. It helps transport heat towards the North Atlantic and influences weather patterns, sea temperatures, marine ecosystems and the wider global water cycle.

For Iceland, the issue is not abstract. The country’s economy and infrastructure depend heavily on the ocean. Fisheries remain central to food systems and exports, while maritime transport, energy planning and settlement patterns are all exposed to changes in sea ice, storms and ocean conditions.

In recent months, Iceland has treated the potential weakening or collapse of the AMOC as a matter of national security. That shift reflects a broader Nordic debate: even if an abrupt collapse before 2100 remains uncertain, the possible consequences would be severe enough to require monitoring, preparedness and adaptation planning.

Experts warn that Iceland has too few ocean current specialists

Hrönn Egilsdóttir, head of the environmental division at the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute (Hafrannsóknastofnun), told RÚV that Iceland does not have enough people working on the physical oceanography needed to interpret AMOC-related data.

“There are more people working in the ice cream shop on the corner than there are ocean physicists in Iceland,” she said.

Her point was not only rhetorical. According to Egilsdóttir, Iceland needs more specialists who can collect, analyse and interpret ocean data, and then turn it into advice for authorities and the public. That advice would feed into risk assessments on possible ecosystem changes, climate impacts and long-term resilience.

The Marine and Freshwater Research Institute has two research vessels, but only a few days at sea each year are currently devoted to ocean current research, Egilsdóttir said. She argued that Iceland, the Nordic countries, the United States and Canada should all examine whether they are investing enough in understanding ocean circulation in the North Atlantic.

What the latest AMOC science does and does not show

The scientific picture remains complex. Halldór Björnsson, head of weather and climate at the Icelandic Meteorological Office (Veðurstofa Íslands), said researchers have broadly expected the AMOC to weaken during this century since at least the 1990s. What has changed is the level of concern about what may happen after 2100, as model projections increasingly point to a substantial weakening.

Björnsson cautioned against simple “doomsday” narratives. A weakened AMOC would not automatically mean an immediate collapse, and the consequences of a collapse remain difficult to model in detail. But he also noted that the end of the century is now close enough for longer-term risks to become politically relevant.

Egilsdóttir also stressed that present-day observations do not show a collapse already under way. Many studies warning of a major weakening or collapse rely on climate models. That does not make them irrelevant, she said, but it means that Iceland needs better data and more local expertise to understand which risks are most plausible.

This distinction is important for public debate. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has assessed that the AMOC is very likely to weaken during the 21st century, while an abrupt collapse before 2100 is not the central expectation. However, recent research has challenged parts of that consensus by suggesting that current models may underestimate the risk of a larger slowdown or a later tipping process.

A Nordic climate issue with security implications

The AMOC debate is particularly important for the Nordic region because its impacts could differ from the most familiar effects of global warming. While global temperatures rise, a major disruption of Atlantic circulation could push parts of Northern Europe towards colder regional conditions, changes in sea ice and shifts in storm tracks.

A Nordic report published in February 2026 called for stronger mitigation, long-term monitoring and preparedness. It also recommended that AMOC risk be integrated into policy processes, including through observational networks and early warning systems linked to decision-making.

For Iceland, the shortage of ocean current researchers points to a wider governance problem. Climate security is increasingly discussed at the political level, but risk management depends on scientific capacity. Without enough experts, Iceland may struggle to translate international models into local assessments for fisheries, ports, infrastructure, agriculture and emergency planning.

The knowledge gap Iceland cannot ignore

The statement that more people work in a local ice cream shop than study ocean currents in Iceland captures a larger imbalance: a small country facing a potentially large climate risk has limited specialist capacity to monitor the system most relevant to that risk.

That does not mean an AMOC collapse is imminent. It does mean that Iceland and its Nordic partners are being pushed to treat ocean science as part of climate adaptation and national resilience. The next phase of the debate will likely focus less on whether worst-case scenarios are certain, and more on whether governments are prepared to understand and manage them before the evidence becomes urgent.
