Danish cinema had its best year since 2018, driven by local hits

Danish cinema recorded its strongest theatrical year since 2018 in 2025, with 3.7 million tickets sold for domestic films in Denmark. New figures from Statistics Denmark show that Danish titles accounted for 37% of all cinema ticket sales, underlining a sharp rebound for local productions in a market that still remains heavily contested by USA releases.

Danish films took a much larger share of the box office

A total of 9.9 million cinema tickets were sold in Denmark in 2025. Of those, 3.7 million were sold for Danish films, the highest figure since 2018. That gave domestic productions a 37% market share, up from 24% in 2024.

The figures suggest that Danish-language and locally produced films were able to attract a broader mainstream audience last year. While American films still made up the largest single share of ticket sales, at 47%, the performance of Danish films marked one of the strongest recent years for the local industry.

Ternet Ninja 3 and Den sidste viking led ticket sales

The year’s biggest cinema title in Denmark was Ternet Ninja 3, which sold 752,000 tickets. It was followed by Den sidste viking, with 704,000 tickets sold.

The third most watched title overall was A Minecraft Film, which sold 370,000 tickets. The ranking shows that Danish productions were not only competitive within the domestic segment, but also among the most commercially successful cinema releases in Denmark overall.

A strong national result in a tougher European market

The Danish Film Institute (Det Danske Filminstitut) has described 2025 as an unusually strong year for local cinema, noting that the 37% share was the highest ever recorded in a normal cinema year since comparable measurements began in 1980. The institute also said Denmark had one of the strongest home-market performances in Europe in 2025.

That result stands out in a European context where cinema attendance overall weakened in several markets. The Danish performance therefore points to the continued strength of local storytelling, franchise films and family-oriented releases in sustaining cinema-going.

What the figures say about Danish cinema in 2026

The numbers do not necessarily mean a full structural recovery for the cinema sector. Total admissions in Denmark remain below pre-pandemic highs, and USA films still held the largest overall share of the market in 2025.

Still, the new figures show that Danish cinema entered 2026 from a position of unusual strength. For NordiskPost readers, the result is also a reminder that Denmark remains one of the Nordic countries where domestic films can still compete strongly in cinemas, even as streaming continues to reshape viewing habits across Europe.
