The Swedish Armed Forces (Försvarsmakten) confirmed the interception of a Russian drone over the Øresund strait on Wednesday. Specifically, a Swedish navy ship neutralized the unmanned aerial vehicle as it approached the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, which was docked in Malmö. Authorities described the event as a serious violation of Swedish airspace and access regulations.
Electronic countermeasures deployed against the drone
The incident began when the Swedish corvette HMS Rapp observed a drone taking off from the Russian signals intelligence ship Zhigulevsk. The Russian vessel was transiting the Øresund strait, the waterway separating Sweden and Denmark. Subsequently, the drone initiated an unauthorized flight toward the restricted military zone surrounding the French flagship.
To neutralize the threat, systems on board HMS Rapp deployed electronic warfare measures. These systems jammed and disrupted the Russian drone at a distance of approximately 13 kilometers from the Charles de Gaulle. Furthermore, the Swedish military stated that the countermeasures functioned correctly. The navy then escorted the Russian intelligence ship out of Swedish territorial waters and into the Baltic Sea.
Reactions from Swedish and French officials
Swedish Minister of Defense Pål Jonson strongly condemned the unauthorized flight. He emphasized that the incident breached Swedish access regulations and violated the country’s airspace. Additionally, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson noted that the timing of the flight aligned with a recognized pattern of Russian behavior in the region.
Meanwhile, the French aircraft carrier is currently visiting Malmö prior to participating in regional NATO exercises. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, who was visiting the carrier, stated that the drone did not threaten the security of the ship. However, he characterized the event as a clear provocation from Moscow. Consequently, a Kremlin spokesperson dismissed the allegations.
Regional security context in the Baltic Sea
This interception occurs within a broader context of heightened tensions in the Baltic Sea region. Recently, several European member states have reported an increase in drone sightings and suspected surveillance operations near military installations.
Western officials interpret these activities as part of a hybrid strategy. This strategy aims to monitor European defense capabilities and divert law enforcement resources. Therefore, the Swedish government recently announced plans to upgrade its electronic warfare systems and drone detection sensors to better protect its borders.
