Musical actor Søren Torpegaard Lund secured victory at the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2026 on Saturday night, defeating the pre-show favorite to represent Denmark at the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest.
The result marks a significant upset in the Danish music calendar. While betting markets and pundits had largely anticipated a win for the artist Sissal, the voting public and jury ultimately selected Lund and his electronic pop track ‘Før vi går hjem’ (Before We Go Home). The competition took place at Arena Nord in Frederikshavn, North Jutland.
A Surprise Victory
The winner was determined through a combined voting system. The decision was split 50/50 between television viewers voting via SMS and app, and a specialized jury consisting of 20 Danish and international Eurovision enthusiasts.
Despite strong initial support for Sissal, the final tabulation placed Søren Torpegaard Lund at the top of the leaderboard. The voting breakdown for the top three acts was as follows:
- Søren Torpegaard Lund – 39 points (20 from viewers, 19 from the jury).
- Ericka Jane – 31 points (17 from viewers, 14 from the jury).
- Sissal – 30 points (13 from viewers, 17 from the jury).
Lund expressed shock immediately following the announcement. “I understand nothing! I am so overjoyed,” he stated on stage, thanking his team and his fiancé, Simon.
Artist Profile and Eurovision Prospects
While this marks his first victory in the competition, Lund is an experienced performer. He previously participated in the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix in 2023. His career includes significant experience in musical theatre; notably, he played the lead role of Tony in a production of West Side Story at the Copenhagen Opera House (Operaen).
Lund will now represent Denmark at the Eurovision Song Contest. Denmark is scheduled to compete in the second semi-final on Thursday, May 14. The grand final follows two days later.
It remains unclear if the entry will be performed in Danish or adapted into English for the European audience. Lund and his production team have not yet disclosed whether ‘Før vi går hjem’ will undergo translation prior to the international contest.
