Finnish Defence Ministry launches programme to boost conscripts’ fitness

The Finnish Defence Ministry has introduced a nationwide initiative to improve the physical fitness of incoming conscripts, starting this autumn in selected municipalities before being rolled out across the country by 2027.

Pilot project begins in five municipalities

The programme will first be tested at conscription events in Taipalsaari, Ruokolahti, Paimio, Lahti and Kouvola. At these events, experts from regional sports organisations and the National Defence Training Association will offer exercise counselling and guidance. They will also provide information on local opportunities for physical activity to support young people preparing for military service.

Fitness app and presidential involvement

In Paimio, Lahti and Kouvola, recruits will use the MarsMars fitness app, which integrates the recently released Commander-in-Chief’s Fitness Programme. Finnish President Alexander Stubb, who serves as Commander-in-Chief and is known for his interest in endurance sports, features prominently in the Defence Forces’ campaign materials promoting physical activity.

Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen (National Coalition Party) emphasised that declining physical fitness among young men represents “a threat to young people’s wellbeing and health, as well as to national defence.” He added that exercise counselling during call-ups is intended to both strengthen conscription readiness and encourage lifelong healthy habits.

The initiative forms part of the broader Finland on the Move policy framework, a national programme designed to foster healthier lifestyles through increased physical activity. By integrating conscription-related fitness initiatives into this wider effort, the Defence Ministry aims to strengthen both public health and military preparedness.
