Norsk Tipping has confirmed a major technical error that led to thousands of users receiving a false notification of having won over one million kroner (approx. €85,000) in Friday night’s Eurojackpot draw.
Display error affects jackpot results
According to the state-owned gambling company, a “display error” in the prize structure for Eurojackpot caused users to see incorrect information. While checking the draw results on Friday evening, many players were shown they had won over one million kroner — despite only having 2+1 correct numbers, a combination that normally yields a much smaller prize.
Norsk Tipping issued a statement explaining that the issue was due to a calculation error, which became evident around 22:30. The company quickly convened an emergency meeting to address the situation.
Widespread confusion and delayed response
Numerous players contacted media outlets, reporting they had received messages claiming they were millionaires. TV 2, one of Norway’s main broadcasters, published screenshots suggesting that over 400,000 users were affected. When contacted, Norsk Tipping’s customer service line played an automated message acknowledging a technical issue and noted that support was currently unavailable.
CEO Tonje Sagstuen confirmed to TV 2 that a contingency meeting had taken place to understand the extent of the error and to begin technical corrections. The company has yet to release a complete explanation for how the fault occurred.
A pattern of technical issues
This is not the first time Norsk Tipping has faced operational difficulties. Earlier this year, another glitch delayed the notification process for several Lotto winners, leaving them unaware of their winnings for more than a day.
The most recent error raises broader concerns about system reliability and the safeguards in place to ensure trust in state-run lotteries. As of Saturday morning, Norsk Tipping has not confirmed how many individuals received the incorrect notification or when the issue will be fully resolved.
