Norwegian websites using the .no domain are now officially considered the most secure in the world, according to a recent global ranking by the DNS Research Federation. The findings place Norway ahead of other countries with strong cybersecurity reputations, such as Denmark (.dk) and Hungary (.hu).
High security and low risk of abuse
The report highlights that websites ending in .no have the lowest rates of abuse globally, including phishing, malware distribution and other forms of cybercrime. This is attributed to Norway’s strict regulatory framework and domain management practices. The national registry, Norid, ensures that every domain registrant is verified and that domains are not granted anonymously, reducing the risk of fraudulent use.
By contrast, domains like .cc, .vip, and .top are among the most frequently abused. These top-level domains often have lax registration requirements, making them more attractive for malicious actors.
A growing concern for digital security
With phishing attempts and fake links on the rise, Norwegian authorities are encouraging users to remain vigilant. Kamilla Sharma, Director at the Norwegian Communications Authority (Nkom), underlined in a press release that “it is not always easy to know which links and websites are safe and which to avoid.” She recommends that users access official websites directly rather than clicking on unknown links, especially those received via SMS or email.
Cybersecurity has become a growing concern across Europe. As online fraud becomes more sophisticated, trust in national digital infrastructures—such as domain systems—plays a critical role in maintaining public confidence and protecting sensitive data.
Norway’s digital infrastructure as a model
The Norwegian model may serve as a reference for other countries aiming to enhance their domain security. Its combination of regulated access, transparent ownership, and public accountability offers a blueprint for reducing cyber threats at the domain level.
While no system is entirely immune to abuse, the data suggest that the .no domain zone offers one of the safest digital environments worldwide.
