Jan Björklund, Sweden’s ambassador to Italy and former leader of Liberalerna (The Liberals), has been appointed as the new Marshal of the Realm (Riksmarskalk) by King Carl XVI Gustaf. Björklund will assume his new role on January 1, 2026, succeeding Fredrik Wersäll.
A respected figure with military, political and diplomatic experience
Björklund’s appointment marks a return to high public service for the former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Education, who led Liberalerna from 2007 to 2019. His background includes service as a professional officer and ambassadorial duties in Rome since 2020.
“Why I was asked, I don’t know, but I know why I said yes. It’s going to be fun to start working with the court, which is a very professional organization, and I’m very honored about the trust I’ve been given by the king,” said Björklund.
He emphasized that he hopes to bring his experience in defense, government and diplomacy to the role, especially in what he described as “turbulent times.”
A historic and strategic role at the heart of the monarchy
As Marshal of the Realm, Björklund will become the 48th holder of the office since its creation in 1607. He will act as the head of the Royal Court, leading approximately 300 employees, managing the Monarchy’s interface with the Government and Parliament, and serving as chief adviser to the king.
Asked about his relationship with the monarch, Björklund noted:
“Know is a strong word, but I’ve worked closely with both the King and the Crown Princess when I was in the government and was deputy prime minister for four years. But this will, of course, be a much closer relationship.”
A signal of stability and continuity for the monarchy
Björklund expressed strong support for the institution of the Monarchy, describing it as a force for unity: “I am for the monarchy, it has very strong support both in the parliament and in public opinion. It has existed for several hundred years and creates continuity.”
His predecessor, Fredrik Wersäll, will transition to the role of Grand Chancellor (Serafimerordens kansler), overseeing the Royal Orders of Chivalry starting January 1, 2026.
The appointment underscores the Swedish Monarchy’s commitment to continuity and professionalism within its highest ranks. With his diverse and extensive background, Jan Björklund is poised to play a crucial role in maintaining the constitutional and ceremonial functions of the Royal Court in the years to come.
