This article has been updated. It previously reported that the iconic Understellet rock bar on Nørrebrogade 24 in Copenhagen would permanently close on April 30th after three decades. However, new information confirms that Understellet will stay open under new ownership.
New management to preserve the spirit but refresh the experience
In a recent statement to KøbenhavnLIV, Atila Bekar, son of the new owner and part of the upcoming leadership team, revealed that Understellet will continue operations: “We intend to run Understellet in the same spirit. But we are definitely giving it a loving update, and we will for sure add a new track or two to the playlist.”
Bekar emphasized a desire to modernize the venue while keeping its essence alive. This includes replacing the former staff with a new team to give the bar “a fresh start.” Beginning May 1st, Understellet will operate with new personnel.
A response to fatigue in the local nightlife scene
“We love Nørrebro, and we think it’s such a shame when great places with so much potential in prime locations become tired,” Bekar added. He sees the revival of Understellet as a chance to rejuvenate one of Copenhagen’s beloved rock landmarks without erasing its identity.

Background: The closure that wasn’t
Originally, the closure was attributed to a decline in guest numbers, rising costs, and a lack of modernization, according to long-time employee Morten Jonatan Bavngaard. He had cited outdated policies — such as a rigid music playlist rule stemming from founder Jørn Tybring Taaning — as factors in the bar’s downturn.
Now, with a new team and fresh direction, Understellet appears poised for a second life, promising both continuity and innovation in Copenhagen’s dynamic nightlife.
