Nordic leaders in Rome to honor Pope Francis

St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City became the epicenter of global mourning today as the funeral of Pope Francis drew an unprecedented assembly of world leaders, royals, and religious dignitaries. Among the 200+ international delegations, the Nordic countries were prominently represented, underscoring their deep ties with the Vatican and the late pontiff’s legacy.

From Norway, Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Maritattended the funeral, representing King Harald V. They were accompanied by Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide, reflecting Norway’s commitment to honoring the Pope’s contributions to global peace and interfaith dialogue.

Sweden‘s delegation included King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, alongside Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. Their presence highlighted the nation’s respect for Pope Francis’s efforts in promoting social justice and environmental stewardship. Also attending from Sweden were Cardinal Anders Arborelius, Archbishop Martin Modéus, Ambassador to Italy Jan Björklund, and Ambassador to the Holy See Per Holmström.

Finland was represented by President Alexander Stubb, who joined other heads of state in paying respects to the Pope’s enduring influence on global humanitarian efforts.

From Denmark, Queen Mary attended the ceremony, signifying the country’s acknowledgment of the Pope’s role in fostering international unity and compassion.

Iceland sent a delegation led by Foreign Minister Bjarni Benediktsson, emphasizing the nation’s appreciation for the Pope’s advocacy for marginalized communities and his commitment to addressing climate change.

A global farewell to a transformative pontiff

The funeral mass, presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, was attended by over 200,000 mourners. Among the notable figures present were EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, USA President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and Prince William, who represented the British monarchy.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, passed away on April 21 at the age of 88. His 12-year papacy was marked by a focus on humility, inclusivity, and social justice. In accordance with his wishes, he was laid to rest in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, a departure from traditional papal burials within the Vatican.

The presence of Nordic leaders at the funeral underscores the widespread impact of Pope Francis’s mission and the deep respect he garnered across diverse cultures and nations.
